DIED. Sidney Janis, 93, internationally known gallery owner and
an early enthusiast for the abstract expressionist and Pop art
schools; in New York City. Born in Buffalo, the dapper dealer was
once a hoofer on the vaudeville circuit. Janis opened his first
gallery in 1948, showing works by such European masters as Jean
Arp, Robert Delaunay and Henri Rousseau. Alfred Barr, founding
director of the Museum of Modern Art, called Janis the "most
brilliant new dealer to have appeared in New York since the war."
