  3.     DIED. Sidney Janis, 93, internationally known gallery owner and
  4. an early enthusiast for the abstract expressionist and Pop art
  5. schools; in New York City. Born in Buffalo, the dapper dealer was
  6. once a hoofer on the vaudeville circuit. Janis opened his first
  7. gallery in 1948, showing works by such European masters as Jean
  8. Arp, Robert Delaunay and Henri Rousseau. Alfred Barr, founding
  9. director of the Museum of Modern Art, called Janis the "most
  10. brilliant new dealer to have appeared in New York since the war."
